How Amateur Testers Are Useful For Businesses

When a new product is created, and before it ever hits the market, it has to go through a testing phase. Some companies hire professional testers, who are paid to do nothing but test games and products day in and day out. However, many of these companies also use the data from amateur testers. This type of data furnishes real-world opinions of a product from a non-technical standpoint. Amateur testers are often paid for their opinion, or receive the product they tested at no charge. If the amateur testers are part of a medical study, they will often receive free medical care and medication for their participation. The data collected from these testers and study participants is raw. It is honest, and from the common man's point of view. The data from these testers is often combined with the data from professional testers, and put into reports that are then handed off to the product developers.

The developers review the data, and determine whether or not a product is ready to be released in its current state, or if the product requires some more work before it is fit for release. Amateur product testers are hired in a variety of ways. Most commonly, companies recruit their testers through newspaper and TV ads. Often, these ads can be found in the help wanted classifieds in the local newspaper. Since participants are often paid, or receive free goods or services, there is a good deal of incentive for people to respond to these ads. In the days of technology, recruiters also use the internet to attract testers. These ads can be found splashed across website banner advertisements, on classified ad websites, or in email boxes. However, it is rare to find these in email boxes since spam filters often weed them out of the inbox. These ads can also be found on social networking sites. Once recruiters have a fair amount of interested testers, they choose the ones they want to test their products. This is done by selecting the people who are the correct demographic for the target product. They take a sampling of people who are the correct age, interest level, and geographical area for the product in question. If testers are needed for a medical study, then the participant must have the correct health condition, but also have the correct stage, or health record, to participate in the study.

The amount of time an amateur tester works with a product varies. Testers may only be needed for a few hours to a few days. Other product trials take weeks or even months. The trial will run as long as possible until the correct amount of data is obtained. Without the correct amount of data, the correct sampling of individuals, and the correct amount of elapsed time before a test can be concluded, data is ineffectual or useless. All parameters must be met, and that is what makes amateur testers so invaluable to developers. Some things cannot be tested by animals or robots. While professional testers are important to product development, sometimes it is the opinion of the common man that matters the most. Amateur testers are essential for product development. When it comes to testing some things, amateur testers can even develop products or medications that save lives. Amateur testers are valuable assets to any company.
